USGS catalogue records include earthquakes and other seismic events. Use Classification to select earthquakes only; unclassified historical records remain unknown, not assumed earthquakes.

Time semantics and dataset methodology

Start is inclusive and end is exclusive, in UTC. Archive mode searches the full selected interval; the record preview is bounded independently from the graph. Historical asOf queries retain their API window limits.

Stored catalogue records are not necessarily distinct earthquakes: aliases, retractions and unresolved provider differences affect completeness. Magnitude scales are not interchangeable, and negative magnitude alone is not an error. Full-selection queries describe stored data, not a guarantee of complete provider history.
