Geological summary

The Massif d'Ambre volcanic field near the northern tip of Madagascar consists of Miocene volcanics capped by more recent cones. The earliest volcanism produced a large basaltic massif and minor pyroclastic flows. The rocks span a wide geochemical spectrum, including basaltic, andesitic, rhyolitic, trachytic, phonolitic, and foiditic compositions. Some features were mapped as Recent by Besairie (1973) based on morphology. Other relatively younger cones are located at the S end of the massif, where Rusquet et al. (2024) indicated an age range of 2-0.8 Ma, and a tabulation of radiometric dates by Cucciniello et al. (2016) listed the youngest as 830 +/- 20 ka (citing Emerick and Duncan, 1982 and 1983).

Weekly volcanic activity reports

Preliminary and selective

Smithsonian/USGS weekly reports are selective and preliminary. They are not a comprehensive list of all eruptions or volcanic activity.

No weekly report appears on this page. Absence from the weekly report does not establish an absence of volcanic activity.

Historical catalogue records

Eruption history

Dates can be approximate, incomplete, or BCE. These are historical catalogue observations, not a statement about present activity.

No historical eruption records appear on this page.
