Geological summary

The Aira caldera in the northern half of Kagoshima Bay contains the post-caldera Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan's most active. Eruption of the voluminous Ito pyroclastic flow accompanied formation of the 17 x 23 km caldera about 22,000 years ago. The smaller Wakamiko caldera was formed during the early Holocene in the NE corner of the caldera, along with several post-caldera cones. The construction of Sakurajima began about 13,000 years ago on the southern rim and built an island that was joined to the Osumi Peninsula during the major explosive and effusive eruption of 1914. Activity at the Kitadake summit cone ended about 4,850 years ago, after which eruptions took place at Minamidake. Frequent eruptions since the 8th century have deposited ash on the city of Kagoshima, located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km from the summit. The largest recorded eruption took place during 1471-76.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera?s Sakurajima volcano) during 14-21 September. Crater incandescence was visible in nighttime webcam images during 14-18 September. Volcanologists conducted a field survey on 15 September and measured high sulfur dioxide emissions, averaging 2,600 tons per day. A total of 32 eruptive events during the week produced ash plumes that rose as high as 2.5 km above the crater and ejected large blocks 600 m from the vent. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and the public was warned to be cautious within 1 km of both the Minimadake and Showa craters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera?s Sakurajima volcano) during 8-14 September. Crater incandescence was visible in nighttime webcam images during 11-14 September. An eruptive event at 1246 on 8 September generated an ash plume that rose 1.3 km above the crater rim and drifted S. Volcanologists conducted a field survey on 10 September and measured high sulfur dioxide emissions, averaging 2,100 tons per day. A total of eight eruptive events during 13-14 September produced ash plumes that rose as high as 2.5 km above the crater and ejected large blocks 600 m from the vent. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and the public was warned to be cautious within 1 km of both the Minimadake and Showa craters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera?s Sakurajima volcano) during 24-31 August. Crater incandescence was visible in nighttime webcam images during 24-28 August. An explosion at 0951 on 25 August generated an ash plume that rose 400 n above the summit, into weather clouds. Volcanologists conducted a field survey on 27 August and measured very high sulfur dioxide emissions, averaging 3,400 tons per day. There were 22 eruptive events recorded during 28-31 August generating ash plumes that rose as high as 2 km above the crater rim. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and the public was warned to be cautious within 1 km of both the Minimadake and Showa craters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera?s Sakurajima volcano) during 17-24 August. Crater incandescence was visible in nighttime webcam images. An eruptive event at 2029 on 17 August generated an ash plume that rose as high as 1.9 km above the summit. An ash plume from an explosion at 0538 on 19 August rose as high as 1.3 km above the summit and drifted NW. Very small eruptive events were recorded during 21-24 August. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and the public was warned to be cautious within 1 km of both the Minimadake and Showa craters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera?s Sakurajima volcano) during 10-17 August. Crater incandescence was visible in nighttime webcam images. The monitoring networks recorded a total of 14 eruptive events and one explosion. Eruptive events during 10-15 August generated ash plumes that rose as high as 1.8 km above the summit and drifted in multiple directions. Emissions were sometimes continuous, notably during 0020-0150 on 12 August, during 1906-2220 on 14 August, and during 1019-1150 on 15 August. An explosion at 2232 on 13 August ejected large blocks 800-1,100 m from the vent; plume characteristics were not reported. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and the public was warned to be cautious within 2 km of both the Minimadake and Showa craters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera?s Sakurajima volcano) during 3-10 August. Sakurajima exhibited ongoing eruptive activity that began in early August 2026, with eruptions producing ash plumes up to 2.2 km above the crater, ejections of large ballistic rocks up to 600 m from the crater, and pyroclastic flows. Monitoring data indicated continuing ground deformation beneath the Aira Caldera as well as high sulfur dioxide emissions. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and the public was warned to be cautious within 2 km of both the Minimadake and Showa craters.
